When Plans Go Sideways

When Plans Go Sideways

The Bahamas is a dream destination for many anglers seeking crystal-clear waters, tropical scenery, and thrilling flats fishing. Our recent trip was poised to be just that—a picture-perfect experience chasing bonefish across expansive flats. However, Mother Nature had other ideas.

Once we arrived, we were greeted with unseasonably warm temperatures. Typically, stable conditions provide ideal opportunities to find tailing bonefish in the shallows. But with temperatures higher than usual, the fish weren't behaving as expected. Instead of cruising the flats in good numbers, they went to deep waters.

Our crew quickly recognized the need to pivot. Flats fishing just wasn't producing so we rigged the conventional rods and hit the smaller reefs off the banks. With winds kicking up to a sporty 15-20 mph, conditions were still challenging. However, tucked near the reefs, we found fish willing to cooperate.

This was a reminder that no matter how well you plan, fishing often demands a plan a,b,c,d or e. So, if you're planning a trip to the Bahamas, be ready for anything. Bring patience, an open mind, and maybe an extra seasickness remedy if the winds decide to join the party. As our trip proved, even when plans go sideways, being on the water is always a blast—especially when you're surrounded by the beautiful blue waters of the Bahamas.
